I started training martial arts at the age of four years old thanks in no small part to the influence of my father Ronald Wells. My first martial art, and entry into the world of grappling was Judo. My Sensei, until his passing in 2003 was Schichidan (7th Degree) Harold Forshey. After his passing I would continue my Judo training under then Nidan (2nd Degree) Tracy Keck, at Michael Krop Judo Club. Here, I continued to train consistently until I was 20, receiving my club promotion to Shodan (1st Degree) in 2010.
I would begin teaching Judo shortly after my promotion to Shodan (Black Belt).
During that same span of time, I competed and trained in numerous martial arts, including Boxing, Juai Kung Karbo, Wrestling, Wing Chun, and MMA.
I would first be introduced to Jujitsu when I went off to college at Florida Atlantic University and began training at American Top Team back in 2010. I would continue to dabble in jujitsu off and on until moving to Texas, after I got out of the military in late 2016. My first jujitsu gym where I began to take training in the art seriously was Aloha CJJF, in Round Rock, TX, back in late 2018.
After about a year of training I would receive my blue belt in December 2019.
During my tenure as a blue belt, I would continue to hone my technique, and implement jujitsu into my Judo and Wrestling style game. I competed in a few tournaments and began coaching.
I would relocate to Concepts BJJ in February 2022, under Professor Eric Fried. Here, I felt not only that I could continue to improve my technique, but I also felt part of a team and great group of people. In June 2022, I would receive my purple belt from Professor Eric Fried.
GAME
My jujitsu game is heavily influenced by my Judo and Wrestling base. I believe in never accepting bad positions and love the art of the scramble. My guard is on par for my rank, but I am by no means a “guard player”. The majority of my guard game centers around sweeps, technical get ups, and back takes. I love working from the top position and am aptly skilled in both smash and outside passing methods.
I prefer a looser style of rolling where I let my partners and opponents move under me and capitalize off of their mistakes. Also, whenever my partner is game, I love to start standing and mix in a variety of throws, sweeps and takedowns.
Over the years, I have adapted my Judo and Wrestling to a Jujitsu/ Grappling style and have curated unique approaches to implement techniques from these disciplines successfully into Jujitsu. I’m a huge advocate for safe training and control on the mats at all times.
BJJ Philosophy
Personally, I love and appreciate every aspect of grappling to my core. I always look at jujitsu from a practical standpoint and believe in making things simple. Occasionally, my career as a Peace Officer for the Austin Police Department necessitates that I use my training to subdue suspects. Therefore, I am always looking for techniques that have both sport and practical application.
